Artist: David Gamble

David Gamble is a multidisciplinary artist from London, now based in New Orleans, LA. His body of work consists of paintings, works on paper, and photographs, all of which have been exhibited globally. Throughout the 1980’s and 90’s, Gamble worked as one of the foremost international editorial photographers for publications such as the Observer, the Independent, LIFE, Fortune, the New Yorker, the Sunday Times, and more.

Over his decades-long career spanning the commercial, journalistic, and fine art realms, Gamble has photographed such illustrious figures as Stephen Hawking, Margret Thatcher and the Dalai Lama with several of his portraits included in the permanent collections of the National Portrait Gallery in London and the Smithsonian’s National Portrait Gallery in Washington, DC.

In 1987, Gamble won the Kodak Award for Best Photographer in Europe as well as a World Press Photo Award in 1988 for his portrait of Stephen Hawking, which was used as the notable cover of Hawking’s “A Brief History of Time.” In 1989 he was given The American Photography Award. His renown in the world of photography led to his being contacted in 1987 by Andy Warhol’s manager Fred Hughes for a once in a lifetime opportunity, to photograph Warhols  hidden home on East 66th St. NYC

Thirty years to the month after the auction of Warhol’s estate in April 2018, Sotheby’s auctioned off, for the first time, two of Gamble’s rare photographs from inside the 66th Street apartment.  Additionally, a large Warhol Medicine Cabinet picture is part of the permanent collection of the Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh. In 2019 Gamble showed his short 16mm film, Esplanade, about an avant garde journey from Algiers Point to City Park in New Orleans, at the New Orleans Film Festival as well as the Museum of Modern Art in New Orleans. He continues to pursue both photographic, painting and tech-art projects.

David Gamble and Neil deGrasse Tyson met around 2006 at a beach gathering in the Hamptons. They eventually became close friends, and along with an astro biologist friend of Gambles who was working at NASA at the time, the three conceptualized, founded and launched Startalk Radio.

Having already taken the iconic photo of Stephen Hawking that appeared on the cover of “A Brief History of Time”, Tyson agreed to let Gamble photograph him at the Hayden Planetarium in NYC in 2008 where he was, and still is, the current Director. Using film and a 120mm Mamiya press camera, Gamble surrounded the acclaimed astrophysicist in an environment with objects synonomious with his interests and work. The spirit of the Hawking portrait, at Tyson’s request, was also referenced.

Tyson’s most used photograph, included in multiple books, on the podium of nearly every lecture he does, the famous astrophysicist says it’s his by far his favorite portrait.

This photograph is in the permanent collection of the Smithsonian’s National Portrait Gallery in Washington D.C .

"Q | 2021 = 2121" series by artist David Gamble & Morphy

These images are created as generative art exporting unique flashing imagery on the surface, only existing for 1 - 2 seconds, and never to be repeated. The flashing images are captured by the artist on digital photography, making split seconds decisions on which pieces will live on and which pieces will never been seen or replicated again, then physically printed using archival inks and subtly painted on, thus merging the traditional art world with that of the futuristic, and finally rephotographed for its nascent NFT form and minted as ERC-721 contracts.

Mash Buhtaydusss is a collaborative art duo from New Orleans, La. Brandt Vicknair is an accomplished photographer who studied film production at The University of New Orleans. Barbie L'Hoste earned her master's degree in studio fine arts from Tulane University and continues to work with collage/ mixed media on paper and canvas.

Mash Buhtaydusss breathes new life into decaying spaces by inviting unlikely characters to join them.

These characters aid in the invention of imaginative landscapes that become meta-narratives in a series of surreal events and disappointments left up for interpretation. Heavy use of satire, nostalgia, and absurdity punctuate each story as we explore the human condition and more closely examine our manufactured predisposition to assign a greater meaning to the ridiculous events of our own lives. A reality of popular culture, social media, corruption, and perversion clash with the ideals of youth to reveal hard truths. In the moments of these abstract stories, we are able to witness the last bits of innocence escape while thinking about the parts of our world that have casually been discarded.
